Fushigi Yuugi is a very popular anime that has recently reached the U.S. The anime is based on the manga by Yu Watase. The anime was very popular when shown on TV in Japan, so an OAV series was created, and Yu Watase even wrote four more manga books because of the popularity of the series. Fushigi Yuugi mixes shoujo with shounen, shoujo being girl's stories & shounen being boy's stories, increasing appeal with both boys and girls.

Fushigi Yuugi is basically translated in English to mean "mysterious dance" or "wonderous dance". This series mixes romance, mythical adventures, comedy, and martial arts action. The series is based on Chinese mythology. According to the mythology, the four regions of China are each connected to an animal god. In Fushigi Yuugi, the sections are renamed, but each are analogous (similar) to real regions in China. The southern region is Konan Country, protected by Suzako, the red peacock or phoenix, and is analogous to southern China. The eastern region is Kuto Country, protected by Seiryuu, the blue dragon, and is analogous to Manchuria. The northern region is Hokan Country, protected by Genbu, the tortoise, and is analogous to Mongolia. The western region is Sailo Country, protected by Byakko, the white tiger, and is analogous to western China with deserts and flatlands.

For each region there is a god which relates to that region, which relates to a direction on the compass. Also, there are seven constellations, and seven seishi named after each of the constellations that are connected to each region. "Seishi" is one of those words that is difficult to translate from Japanese to English, but it is best translated to be "constellation warrior" or "star protector." I prefer "star warrior" personally. The seishi for the Konan Country are Tamahome, Hotohori, Nuriko, Tasuki, Chichiri, Mitsukake, and Chiriko. The seishi for the Kuto Country are Nakago, Soi, Amiboshi, Suboshi, Tomo, Ashitare, and Miboshi. The seishi for the Hokan Country are Hikitsu, Inami, Uruki, Tomite, Uramiya, Hatsui, and Namame. The seishi for the Sailo Country are Tokaki, Tatara, Kokie, Subaru, Amefuri, Karasuki, and Toroki.

The series begins with Yuuki Miaka and Hongo Yui, two junior high school students, at the library to study. They come across a book called Shinjin Tenchi Sho, which is translated to "The Four Gods of Heaven and Earth." As they begin to read, the girls unknowingly begin an ancient chant to cast a spell. The book begins to glow, and a red portal opens, which the book describes will be used when the help of a young girl is needed in anouther world. They are drawn into this other world by the portal, and land unconscious in what appears to be a desert. They try to figure out where they are and how to get out of the desert when they are attacked by a gang. Just as the gang is about to beat them up, a young man enters. He has the character for oni ("ogre") on his forehead, and he defeats the gang. He asks for money in return for his services, but the girls are unable to pay. Somehow, Yui is separated from Miaka and is transported back to the library, and Miaka follows the mysterious man. Yui then follows along with Miaka's adventures, and even experiences the injuries that Miaka injures. In Konan Country, where Miaka has landed, she is identified as the girl prophesized by the book to be the Suzaku no Miko, the Priestess of the Konan Country and the red phoenix.

Miaka's mission as Suzaku no Miko is to gather all the seven Seishi of the southern region, which is Konan Country. Once she does so, she will perform a ceremony in which she will be given three wishes and a way to return home.
